TOUR PROGRAMS IN KASTAMONU and its VICINITY
Tour 1- Kastamonu historical city tour (1 full day)
Program: In the morning Office of the Governor and the Urban History Museum, Republic Square and the Monument of Martyr Sister Şerife, Homeland Library, clock tower and bird’s eye view of the city. Nasrullah Mosque, its fountain and its square, Darüşşifa (hospital) with snake, Münire Medrese.
Lunch Break: It is possible to have Kastamonu’s most famous meat bread and local traditional menus with the precious hospitality of Uğurlu Mansions.
YAfter lunch trip to Liva Pasha Mansion, a splendiferous Kastamonu house of hundred years functioning as Etnography Museum, then Yakupağa religious complex and helva house. Thereafter, visit to Mimar Vedat Tek Culture Center which contains the first and only hat museum of Turkey and many collections. Finally, we spend our time for getting familiar with the traditional handicrafts of Kastamonu. First, we stroll around the Center of Handwoven Textiles (at that moment rock graves appear from there), then sample building of the Woodwork Handicrafts bound to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Tour 2- Trip to historical city Kastamonu and its surroundings (2 full days)
1st day: Morning Office of the Governor and Urban History Museum, Republic Square and the Monument of Martyr Sister Şerife, Homeland Library, clock tower and bird’s eye view to the city. Nasrullah Mosque, its fountain and its square, Darüşşifa (hospital) with snake, Münire Medrese.
Lunch break: It is possible to have Kastamonu’s most famous meat bread and local traditional menus with the precious hospitality of Uğurlu Mansions.
After the lunch, we see the splendiferous Kastamonu House Liva Pasha Mansion of 100 years old and the Archeological Museum. Thereafter, visit to the Mimar Vedat Tek Culture Center which encompasses the first and only hat museum of Turkey and many collections. Finally, we spend our time to learn the traditional handicrafts of Kastamonu. First, we stroll around the Handwoven Works Center (at that moment rock graves appear from there), then sample building of the Woodenwork Crafts bound to the Ministry of Agriculture. At evening we may spend our leisure time by shopping at the bazaar center and medrese and by buying traditional products and sipping our tea or traditional sahlep pleasantly.
2nd day: On this day, we’ll see remaining places and we’ll have short trips to the trip locations in the surroundings of the center of Kastamonu province in nature. Our program will begin after the breakfast with a visit to the Sheikh Şaban-ı Veli Religious Complex in the vicinity of our mansions and the Foundation Museum there. Thereafter, we move upward to the castle in the vicinity of the city and look at the city from top. Then, we stroll around the neighborhoods under the castle, we will see there the oldest mosque of the city, the Atabeygazi Mosque, the Yakupağa Complex, the old municipality building (Ottoman palace), the old coppersmith bazaar and the han regions. Then, we’ll see the Ismailbey Complex, the last masterpiece of Candaroğlu period, a structure dates back to 15th century and head toward Daday. Then, we’ll see the Candaroğlu Mahmut Bey Mosque at a distance of 17 km to Kastamonu. This mosque dated to 1366, which is one of the few surviving mosques with wooden pillars, preserves its original woodwork and dyestuff. After our visit, we carry on our way to Daday. At Daday we may taste “Daday style baked meat bread” which is one of the most special tastes of Kastamonu cuisine. Then we may go to a horse tourism center near Daday, we may stroll around in the midst of dark green nature, we may ride horse and have a pleasant noon. Evening, return to Kastamonu.
Tour 3- Kastamonu-Azdavay-Pınarbaşı (2 days)
1st day: The same program with the one lasting 1 day.
2nd day: We head toward the Pınarbaşı district after breakfast. With a small break we see the Candaroğlu İsmailbey Complex, the masterpiece of 15th century, on the way. Then, we see Candaroğlu Mahmut Bey Mosque, one of the few surviving mosques with woodwork pillars (the original woodcraft and dyestaff is preserved from 14th century). At noon we arrive at Pınarbaşı district. Our lunch break at a facility at Pınarbaşı with traditional products. After lunch we will go to Valla Canyon, we will have a pleasant walk in the forest and we will arrive at a point where we may see the canyon from birds’ eye view. Then, having a run we’ll reach Ilıca waterfalls and after a short walk we take pictures at the waterfalls. At evening return to Kastamonu. Lodging.
(This tour may be organized at spring and summer where days are long, during autumn and winter Valla Canyon may be dropped from the program, instead Horma Canyon, at a very short distance to Pınarbaşı, may be visited). It is possible to organize this program at summertime with a fast tempo by including Çatak Canyon in Azdavay and Valla Canyon in Pınarbaşı. However, depending on the fulfillment and weariness coming after the trip, we suggest you to visit these two important canyons separately in two days. Ecotourism devotees will be satisfied utmost by a Küre Mountains trip for 2 days either by lodging at Kastamonu or by lodging for one night at Pınarbaşı or Azdavay.
Tour 4- Kastamonu-Inebolu-Abana (2 days)
1.gün:1st day: The same as the one lasting one full day.
2nd day: Full day Küre-Inebolu -Abana trip: Early in the morning heading toward Küre, a pretty district of Kastamonu having great economic importance due to its copper mines being operated since hundreds of years. We have a break at Ecevit Han, which is on the way of ammunition road during the War of Independence, in its renewed style as a tourism facility. Then, heading toward old Küre copper mines. Examining a mine dated back to the times of Genoese. Visiting restored Akşemsettin Mosque dating from the 15th century at the center of the district. Then heading toward Inebolu and arrival after a travel of 30 minutes. Visit to “Gazi İnebolu” district. Inebolu, with its wooden houses reflecting Rum (Byzantine or Ottoman Greek) architecture, dark green nature and excellent coastline, amazes the visitors. Visit to the Türkocağı Building where Atatürk had read his famous “Hat Oration”. After the lunch heading toward Abana. Opportunity to have a walk at the amazing coast and to have a tea at the seaside (it is possible to swim at summer). At evening return to Kastamonu via Bozkurt. On this route “Yaralıgöz Passage” takes breath away thanks to its wonderful pattern of forests and the mist which is present four seasons!! Arrival at Kastamonu and overnight.
Tour 5- Kastamonu-Taşköprü (2 days)
1st day: The same as the one lasting one full day
2nd day: After the breakfast we head toward Taşköprü, one of the largest districts of Kastamonu having many cultural riches. First a run for 30 minutes and we arrive at Donalar village where we visit the rock graves. This utmost exceptional rock grave with reliefs which are dated to B.C. 5th century impresses visitors. (One may reach to Donalar village only by passenger cars or minibusses, not by busses). Then, we travel to Taşköprü district center and visit historical stone bridge, Taş Mosque, historical houses, and restored historical ammunition building respectively. Then, we have a lunch break and taste delicious pit kebab (biryan kebab) whose name is associated with Taşköprü. After the dinner we go to Pompeiopolis excavation site and visit (if the weather is suitable) this important city which had been a very important military post and Anatolian province center of Roman Empire especially from the 1st B.C. to 2nd-3rd A.D. In the ruins we visit a villa and its path mosaics, an excavation of a theatre, a church etc. which are brought to light lately. Besides next to the ruins we visit the small museum where historical artifacts found in excavation are brought to light (heavily Roman period), it may not be possible to visit the museum except excavation periods. Before returning, we do not forget to buy the garlic of Taşköprü, which is famous worldwide. At evening returning to Kastamonu and having leisure time.
Tour 6- Kastamonu-Loç Valley-Cide (2 days)
1st day: The same as the one lasting one full day
2nd day: After the breakfast, we head toward Kastamonu’s districts which are wonders of nature. Via Şenpazar district we head toward Cide, and when there are 23 km still left before arriving at Cide we depart from the main road and diverge to Loç Valley. At the point the detour extends 8 km we arrive at Loç Valley. Before walking towards the valley, we may have a break at Fırın Gıran bend at Hamitli Village which is a place to be seen before arriving at the valley, then we may take pics in order to document the beauties of Loç valley. We may have our lunch consisting of traditional food at the village thanks to the hospitality of the inhabitants of Loç. After the dinner, having a walk from Karakadı village center neighborhood towards the Sökü Hill where the Black Sea climate suddenly ceases and gives way to the Mediterranean climate, we may see the natural beauty up to the Küre Mountains from the other angle of the valley, which is not disturbed by HPP yet. We may take unspeakable chasm pics on the karst rocks. Then, if the weather is suitable we may swim where the Devrekani rivulet creates a pond. On our return we may be a surprise visitor to a village house, we may have a chat there with the hosts and sip our teas. At evening we may return to Kastamonu or head toward Cide, and may lodge at this pretty coastal town to head toward Amasra or to return to Kastamonu (It is a must to see the house of the author Rıfat Ilgaz which has become a museum)
Tour 7- Kastamonu-Safranbolu (2 days)
1st day: The same as the one lasting one full day
2nd day: After the breakfast, heading toward Safranbolu. After a road of one and a half hours arrival at Safranbolu. Walking around in the city: castle (Old Governmental Residence, clock tower), bazaar and bazaar square, Kazdağlı Mosque, Köprülü Mehmet Paşa Mosque and Izzet Mehmet Paşa Mosque, Yemeniciler Arastası (Kerchief Producers Bazaar), House of the District Governor, Hıdırlık Hill. Free time for lunch and shopping. Afternoon return to Kastamonu.
Tour 8- Kastamonu and its districts (4 days, culture and nature combined tour)
1st day: Departure from Istanbul early in the morning with bus or with airplane at noon (or land route via Ankara) arrival at Kastamonu early at afternoon. Settling in hotel. Then city tour at Kastamonu: Nasrullah Square and Nasrullah Mosque, Liva Pasha Mansion, Ismail Bey Complex, Deve Han, Republic Square and clock tower. Return to the hotel at evening and overnight.
2nd day: After the breakfast we head toward Azdavay and Pınarbaşı, pretty districts of Kastamonu. First, we visit Candaroğlu Mahmut Bey Mosque dated back to the 14th century with a distance of 17 km to Kastamonu. This mosque, an utmost beautiful example of wooden pillared mosque type, is precious for its colored pen work and is under protection of first degree. Then, we’ll visit pretty Daday and Azdavay districts and cross the Ballıdağ location which is one of the most dense forest regions in Küre Mountains, and arrive at Pınarbaşı. This area, recently obtaining Pan Parks status is a natural conservation area of first class and encompasses the richest forest areas of Küre Mountains. Besides within the Pınarbaşı district Ilgarini Cave, one of the largest canyons and again an important cave, is present. We have our lunch at a facility in Pınarbaşı and taste traditional food. After the dinner, going to Valla Canyon, we stroll around in the forest pleasantly, we arrive at a point where we can look at the canyon from bird’s view and from there we may watch the canyon. Then, by a short trip we arrive at Ilıca Waterfalls, after a short walk we take pics of the waterfall. At evening arriving at Pınarbaşı and lodging in one of the accommodation facilities there.
3rd day: Full day Ilgarini Cave and Pınarbaşı environment trip. Ilgarini Cave, being reached after a hard trip of two and a half hours may be visited on long days and during dry seasons. We arrive at the point with minibuses where we will begin to walk, and thereafter we begin to stroll around with the help of our guide. After a hard walk our reward is an interesting cave with Byzantine ruins, traces of settlements and interesting formations. Our lunch is a picnic. After noon we visit Zümrüt Village, an ecotourism implementation village. We may visit the neighboring district Azdavay thereafter. Çatak Canyon which is situated here amazes those encountering it with its abysmal depth of 1200 m. Return to Pınarbaşı and lodging.
4th day: At morning at 08.30 a departure, heading toward Safranbolu. On our way, visit to historical Yörükköy which is a miniature of Safranbolu. Then, we discover Safranbolu while walking: Bazaar Square, Kazdağlı Mosque, Cinci Han, House of the District Governors, Castle and clocktower, Hıdırlık Hill, Bağlar neighborhood, old houses and streets. Opportunity to lodge and shop at Yemeniciler Arastası (Kerchief Producers Bazaar). At evening heading toward Istanbul or Ankara.
Tour 9- Western Black Sea 1 (4 days/ Paphlagonia short)
1st day: Early in the morning departure from Istanbul, arrival at Safranbolu at noon. Lunch and walking around the city: Bazaar, Cinci Han and Hamam, Kazdağlı Mosque, Köprülü Mehmet Paşa Mosque and Izzet Mehmet Pasha Mosque, House of the District Governors, Arasta bazaar and break for shopping. A break for taking pics at Hıdırlık Hill. Lodging at Safranbolu.
2nd day: After the breakfast heading toward Bartın. Arrival at noon. Strolling around the city Bartın. Old houses and streets. Strolling around the mouth of Bartın Rivulet. After the lunch heading toward Amasra. On the way Kuşkayası road monument from Roman times. Strolling around at Amasra, trip to Genoese castle. Fortifications, Genoese coat of arms, churches and ruins of a harbor may be seen. Visit to museum and tea at the harbor and a break for shopping. Lodging at Amasra or Bartın.
3rd day: On the day which begins with a trip to the heart of Küre Mountains via Bartın and Ulus, we have a nature trip to Pınarbaşı. First we arrive at Horma Canyon and have a pleasant walk through a walking path of 3.5 km constructed there over the canyon. Then we have a walk around Ilıca Waterfalls where a stream flows within the canyon pours out its waters and if the climate conditions permit we have a picnic there. Then, visit to Valla Canyon and having a bird’s view to the canyon. At evening heading toward Kastamonu and lodging at Uğurlu Mansions in Kastamonu.
4th day: Full day Kastamonu city tour: Governorship Urban History Museum, Homeland Library, Republic Square and Martyr Sister Şerife Monument, clock tower and looking from bird’s view to the city. Nasrullah Mosque, fountain and square, Münire Medrese. Lunch break, with the delicious traditional food of Uğurlu Mansions. After the dinner, visit to Liva Pasha Mansion, a Kastamonu house of 120 years functioning as Etnography Museum, and Arcihtecture Vedat Tek Culture Center which contains the first and only hat museum of Turkey and many more collections. Finally, we spend our time to get familiar with the traditional handicrafts of Kastamonu. We visit first the Handiwork Center under the Governorship (at that instance the rock graves there become apparent) and then Woodwork Handicraft sample building under the Ministry of Agriculture.
On the long days, we may continue our way towards Ankara or Sinop. We have to finish our program at evening in order to return to Istanbul via land route or airplane, or we have to lodge at Kastamonu one more night.
Tour 10- Western Black Sea-2 (5 days/ Paphlagonia long )
First 3 days are same with the 4 Paphlagonia tour of 4 days.
4th day: At morning with a city tour of 3 hours the city center of Kastamonu is seen: Republic Square, Governor Building, Urban History Museum, Nasrullah Mosque and its square, Münire Medrese, Liva Pasha Mansion, Vedat Tek Culture Center. Then, heading toward Inebolu. City tour by walking: Türkocağı Building (War of Independence and Atatürk Museum), then continuing towards Ayancık by coast. Staying in Ayancık.
5th day: With a short trip from Ayancık we reach Tatlıca waterfalls in the vicinity of Erfelek District. Hiking with mid-level difficulty, we climb towards waterfalls following each other as cascades. It is possible to have a picnic for dinner. At evening it is possible to return to Istanbul or Ankara or to Sinop.
Ilgaz Mountain tours
From the beginning of December till the end of March it is possible to have ski tours, as a group or individually, each weekend departing from Istanbul or Ankara. If you wish you may lodge either at the facilities in Ilgaz or at Uğurlu Mansions in Kastamonu. It is possible to ascend to Ilgaz with our service on a daily basis. If you don’t ski, city tours are organized.
